Barclays does not publish a specific Blue Rewards policy for cancellation due to moving. You can cancel your Blue Rewards membership through Online Banking or the app as a customer at any time. For address updates use your Barclays account settings or branch services.
If Barclays changes the Blue Rewards offering so that you no longer receive comparable benefits, you may cancel. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 protects consumers against unfair contract terms. Barclays must follow its published terms and appropriate notification requirements.
Barclays does not publish a dedicated Blue Rewards procedure for a deceased account holder in the Blue Rewards materials. Estates and executors should contact Barclays directly via the usual deceased customer procedures to close or manage accounts and any associated services.
From Barclays material and the Blue Rewards Additional Terms and Conditions, legitimate grounds include loss of eligibility where monthly pay-in drops below required threshold. Barclays may end Blue Rewards if you no longer meet eligibility. They will give two months notice when they remove the service for value reasons.
There is no minimum commitment for customers. You may cancel at any time. If you cancel before 5pm on the last day of the month the next monthly fee will not be charged.
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have a 14-day cooling-off period for contracts concluded at a distance. Barclays states that if you cancel within the first 14 days of receiving the Additional Conditions and have already paid a monthly fee, Barclays will refund the fee.
Applicable laws: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Barclays does ongoing reviews to ensure customers receive fair value and may change the Blue Rewards fee or benefits. There are no published, guaranteed retention offers for Blue Rewards in the research data. If you want to retain benefits, ask in Online Banking Messages or at a branch: request a benefits review and ask whether a retention or alternate product is available. Provide evidence of your monthly pay-in and how you use the account benefits to support your request.
Cost of Blue Rewards: £5 per month. Yearly cost calculation: 5 x 12 = £60 per year.
Value comparison: Apple TV+ included at £9.99 per month is worth 9.99 x 12 = £119.88 per year. Net saving from Apple TV+ alone if you keep Blue Rewards is 119.88 - 60 = £59.88 per year.
Cheapest real alternative from competitors in our research: Zopa Biscuit Current Account - price monthly £0, price annual £0. Choosing Zopa instead of Blue Rewards would save £60 per year on fees.
The key protections for Barclays Blue Rewards customers include the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (14-day cooling-off period for distance contracts) and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (services must be performed with reasonable care and skill and unfair contract terms can be unenforceable). Regulators and escalation routes include the Financial Conduct Authority, the Prudential Regulation Authority, the Financial Ombudsman Service and Citizens Advice.
First complain to Barclays by Online Banking Messages, in branch or in writing. If the outcome is unsatisfactory, escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service. For guidance on cancelling contracts and cooling-off see Citizens Advice: Citizens Advice - cancelling a service. For a precedent decision about Blue Rewards disputes see the Financial Ombudsman decision: FOS decision DRN-5725876.
If you paid by credit card for an associated charge, Section 75 may apply. You may also request a chargeback via your card issuer for qualifying card payments. If Barclays breached its terms or failed to notify you of changes that removed expected benefits, you can complain and escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Barclays states the monthly fee is taken on the second working day of the month and that if you cancel before 5pm on the last day of the month the next monthly fee will not be charged. Barclays also states that if either party cancels Blue Rewards the monthly fee will continue to be collected until the Blue Rewards membership is closed but no future monthly fees will be charged.
Your Blue Rewards benefits stop when your Blue Rewards membership closes. If a subscription such as Apple TV+ was provided via Blue Rewards, access will end when the membership is closed. Check the provider account for Apple TV+ and cancel separately if required to avoid being charged directly by the subscription provider.
Retain copies of cancellation confirmations and screenshots. Check bank statements for the last Blue Rewards fees and confirm no further £5 charges occur after the membership closure. Update any automatic payments or linked benefits you used through Blue Rewards.
