Cancel Google Drive the easy way

Overview

Google Drive is Google's cloud storage service that stores files, photos and email attachments and shares storage with Google Photos and Gmail. It is the consumer-facing storage element of Google One paid plans and the free tier provides 15 GB of shared storage.

Web - cancel via Account storage settings

1. Open one.google.com/about/plans or go to your Google Account and choose Storage or Google One settings.
2. Sign in with the Google Account that purchased the plan.
3. Find your current plan and click "Cancel plan" or "Cancel subscription."
4. Review the on-screen notice about what will happen to your storage and confirm by clicking "Cancel plan."
5. Check your email for a confirmation message. Keep that email as proof.

Android - cancel through Google Play

1. Open the Google Play Store app on the device signed into the purchasing account.
2. Tap your profile, then Subscriptions.
3. Select the Google One or storage subscription and tap Cancel subscription.
4. Follow the on-screen steps and keep the Play Store confirmation email or receipt.

iOS - purchases made through Apple

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap your name, then Subscriptions.
2. Find the Google One or Google storage subscription and tap Cancel.
3. To request a refund, contact Apple Support. Google will not process App Store refunds.

Post - registered letter

1. Address a registered letter to: Google Drive, 76 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TQ London, United Kingdom.
2. Include a clear statement that you want to cancel (use the word "Cancel").
3. Sign, date and include the email address associated with the account and any purchase receipts.
4. Keep the registered mail receipt as proof of notification.

Moving abroad or relocation

If you are moving and need to cancel, provide a clear written notification with supporting documentation such as a signed tenancy termination, utility bill in the new address or travel tickets. Google Drive does not publish a specific relocation exemption; cancellation is available by notifying the trader and is effective from the time of notification. Price increase

If Google notifies you of a price increase for a renewal, you may cancel in the renewal cooling-off period without charge by sending a clear statement of cancellation. Death of the subscriber

To cancel an account after the death of the subscriber, provide a clear cancellation request plus a death certificate and evidence of authority if someone else is acting. Google Drive does not publish a specific form for death-based cancellation; use a written statement to the trader and supply official documents. Legitimate ground (service breach or lack of conformity)

If the service is not supplied with reasonable care and skill, this constitutes a breach under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and gives grounds to terminate. End of commitment

If you have completed a prepaid or fixed-term period, cancel before the renewal date using the account settings. The contract ends at the end of the paid period and future payments will stop. Cooling-off (14 days)

For purchases made online, you have a 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 unless you agreed to immediate supply of digital content which removes the right to withdraw. For storage plans, where you agreed to immediate access to digital content you may lose the automatic 14-day right if you gave express consent. Before you cancel: negotiate

Research does not list any publicly reported retention offers made by Google Drive. To request a retention or discount, open your Google Account > Help or contact Google One support from your account, state your intent to cancel and request a promotional offer. If your purchase was through Apple or Google Play, also check their subscription management pages for any available trial or promotional credits.

What cancelling saves you - yearly calculations

Use the monthly price multiplied by 12 to compute annual cost when an annual price is not used. Examples:

• Basic plan: £1.99 x 12 = £23.88 per year (or pay annual price £19.99).
• Standard plan: £2.99 x 12 = £35.88 per year (or pay annual price £29.99).
• Premium plan: £7.99 x 12 = £95.88 per year (or pay annual price £79.99).
• AI Premium plan: £18.99 x 12 = £227.88 per year.

Cheapest real alternative from competitors: Microsoft OneDrive at £1.99 monthly or £19.99 annually. Example saving if you cancel Premium (£7.99) and move to OneDrive monthly (£1.99): (7.99 - 1.99) x 12 = £72.00 per year saved.

Key UK consumer law

The relevant laws are the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for service quality and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 for distance selling and the 14-day cancellation right. Cooling-off and refunds

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have a 14-day cancellation period for distance contracts. If you agreed to immediate access to digital content, you may have waived that right. Escalation steps

1. Complain in writing to Google Drive support and keep the reply. 2. Seek help from Citizens Advice if unresolved. 3. If payment was by credit card, consider Section 75 or a chargeback via your card issuer. 4. Report suspected unfair auto-renewal practices to the CMA.

Access and data retention

After cancellation you retain access to paid features for the remainder of your billing period. At the start of the next month your account storage will downgrade to the free 15 GB tier. If your stored data exceeds 15 GB after downgrade, Google will prevent new uploads and may restrict functionality until you reduce usage or resubscribe.

Final billing and re-activation

You will not be charged further after the current paid period ends. To re-activate, sign back into the same Google Account and subscribe again via your account storage settings. Keep your confirmation email from cancellation and any receipts in case of billing disputes.

Follow this checklist before and after cancelling to protect your files and payments.

• Download any files you need and keep a local backup before the downgrade.
• Check current storage usage: if above 15 GB, delete or move files or expect access limits.
• Cancel the subscription from the account that made the purchase and save the confirmation email.
