Cancel by reason

Moving / relocation

Rule - There is no specific Steam policy that treats moving as an automatic ground for immediate refund. Notify Steam Support with a clear statement cancelling the subscription. If you seek a refund for a recent renewal, follow the 48-hour refund rule for renewable subscriptions provided by Steam if the subscription has not been used during the billing cycle.

Required proof documents - Proof of new address where relevant (utility bill or tenancy agreement) if the trader requests it; screenshot of cancellation confirmation.

Applicable law - Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 for rights when contracts were concluded online and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 s.264 for renewal cooling-off rights where relevant.

Price increase

Rule - If Steam or a third-party developer increases the price or changes the terms, you may have a right to cancel. Notify Steam with a clear statement. If Steam has applied a price increase tied to a subscription renewal and you cancel, you will not be charged going forward once cancellation takes effect.

Required proof documents - Copy of the price-change notice (email or in-account message) and the cancellation confirmation.

Applicable law - Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 s.264 and Consumer Rights Act 2015 protections on unfair contract terms.

Death of subscriber

Rule - Steam does not publish a dedicated process for death of a subscriber. Contact Steam Support and provide a clear cancellation statement from the executor or account holder representative.

Required proof documents - Official death certificate or probate documents; evidence of right to act for the estate. Steam's support team will advise on account access and refunds.

Applicable law - No specific Steam article; consumer rights and contract termination rules under UK law will apply where relevant.

Legitimate ground (fraud, account compromise, violation)

Rule - If your account has been compromised or you report fraudulent charges, use Steam Support to report theft or fraud immediately. Steam’s policies say if an account is restricted, terminated, or canceled by Valve for violation of the Subscriber Agreement, no refund will be granted for subscription fees or unused Steam Wallet funds.

Required proof documents - Evidence of fraudulent activity (bank statements, unauthorised transaction IDs), support ticket history.

Applicable law - Steam Subscriber Agreement and the refund rules at Steam Subscriber Agreement - Refund Policy.

End of commitment

Rule - Steam does not publish minimum fixed-term subscriptions for general store purchases. If a subscription product you purchased has a fixed minimum term, cancellation processes will be shown on the purchase page and in Account Details. For renewable subscriptions Steam states you can cancel at any time and the subscription will not automatically renew.

Required proof documents - Purchase receipt and cancellation confirmation.

Applicable law - Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 where relevant and the Steam Subscriber Agreement.

Cooling-off period

Rule - For digital content the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 provide a 14-day right to cancel for most online contracts, but the right can be lost if the consumer expressly agreed that download or streaming should begin and they confirmed they would lose the right once the service began. For renewable subscriptions, Steam states refunds for renewals are allowed within 48 hours of the initial purchase or any automatic renewal if the subscription has not been used during the billing cycle.

Required proof documents - Cancellation notice, evidence of when streaming or download began, and any usage logs.

Applicable law - Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 s.264. See Steam's refund rules at Steam Refunds.

Negotiate or save

Before you cancel: negotiate

Retention offers - Research does not show publicly reported retention discounts from Steam. Valve does not publish a standard retention offer process. To attempt negotiation, open a Steam Support ticket, explain why you are cancelling and ask if any promotional credit or account options are available. Provide account and purchase details. Keep the support ticket number as proof.

What cancelling saves you - math and alternatives

There is no single Steam subscription price published for all users. For comparison, here are concrete competitor prices and yearly cost calculations you can use to evaluate savings.

Xbox Game Pass - monthly £10.99. Yearly cost: 10.99 x 12 = £131.88 per year.

EA Play - monthly £5.99 or annual £35.99. Yearly cost if monthly: 5.99 x 12 = £71.88 per year. Annual cost: £35.99 per year.

Example savings if you cancel Xbox Game Pass and instead take EA Play annual: £131.88 - £35.99 = £95.89 saved per year.

If you primarily use low-cost purchases, Steam Wallet top ups are available at £4.00, £10.00, £25.00, £50.00 and £100.00, letting you control spend without committing to a subscription.

What to do after cancelling Steam

Access and service end

When you cancel a renewable Steam subscription, Steam stops automatic renewal but you retain access to content and benefits until the end of the current billing cycle. Keep the cancellation confirmation as proof of future non-renewal.

Data and account

If you wish to close your Steam account completely, contact Steam Support. Be aware that Valve states if an account is terminated for violations, no refunds will be made for subscriptions or Steam Wallet funds. Back up any game saves stored locally; cloud saves depend on publisher settings.

Final billing and refunds

If you want a refund for a renewal, you must request a refund within 48 hours of the purchase or automatic renewal if the subscription has not been used in the billing cycle. For other purchases, Steam’s general refund rule applies (refund requests for games are accepted within 14 days and fewer than two hours of play for most titles). Use Steam Refunds to submit requests.

Next steps and practical checklist

Use this checklist to cancel and protect your rights.

  • Sign in to your Steam account and go to Account Details - Manage Subscriptions and cancel. Take a screenshot of the confirmation.
  • If you were charged on renewal and did not use the subscription, submit a refund request within 48 hours at Steam Refunds.
  • If billed through Apple or Google, cancel through Apple ID Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions and keep screenshots.
  • Save receipts and order IDs for all purchases and refunds.
  • If Steam refuses a refund you believe due, gather all evidence and contact Citizens Advice or the CMA; consider Section 75 or chargeback through your card issuer for qualifying payments.
  • If you send postal notice, use registered post to Steam, Crown Way, CF14 3UZ Cardiff, United Kingdom and keep the receipt.
