Cancel KAL the easy way

Overview

KAL operates leisure centre memberships under the KAL brand in the United Kingdom. KAL offers full gym access, off-peak options, single-centre (gym only) memberships and annual prepay options. Memberships may be monthly Direct Debit or 12-payment contract or annual prepaid.

Who uses KAL

KAL members include local residents who want multi-centre access in the Huddersfield area and users who prefer off-peak pricing. KAL accepts annual prepayments and has member benefits such as the ability to freeze membership for up to 3 months per year with 3 days notice.

Service limits

KAL requires written cancellation requests and enforces a 30 day notice for monthly members. During the 14 day cooling-off period for contracts bought online a guest fee of £15 applies for visits.

Web

1. Visit the KAL website membership area or the cancellation/contact form.
2. Complete the cancellation form including membership number, name and reason for leaving.
3. Submit and keep a screenshot or copy of the submission.
4. Await confirmation from [email protected]; cancellation is effective after the 30 day notice period once accepted.

iOS

1. Check for a KAL iOS app and its account area. KAL does not publish an in-app cancellation method.

Android

1. Check for a KAL Android app and its account settings. KAL does not publish an in-app cancellation method.

Phone

1. KAL does not publish a phone cancellation number; if you have a local centre phone number use it only to ask for the correct cancellation route.
2. Follow up with an email to [email protected] or a signed posted letter to ensure written proof.

Email

1. Send an email to [email protected] with subject 'Membership cancellation' and include full name, membership number, DOB and requested cancellation date.
2. State if you are exercising your 14-day cooling-off right when the contract was purchased online.
3. Keep a copy of the sent email and any reply. Cancellation will normally need 30 days notice and KAL will review the request.

Post

1. Write a signed letter including full name, membership number, date of birth and the requested cancellation date.
2. Send by recorded delivery to: KAL, Stadium Way, HD1 6PG Huddersfield, United Kingdom.
3. Keep proof of postage and the signed-for receipt. KAL requires 30 days notice after acceptance for standard cancellations.

Relocation (moving house)

KAL accepts relocation as a valid reason for early cancellation if you move more than 15 miles from the nearest KAL centre. Required proof: a copy of new tenancy agreement, mortgage completion statement or utility bill showing new address and a proof of distance (postcode check). Medical reasons

KAL accepts medical grounds for early termination of a contract. Required proof: a signed letter from a GP or consultant stating that gym use is not advisable and duration if temporary. Email the medical evidence to [email protected]. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 regarding fair contract terms and reasonable grounds for early termination.

Redundancy

KAL accepts redundancy as a legitimate ground to end a fixed-term contract early. Required proof: formal redundancy notice or P45. Email evidence to [email protected]. If you are still in the initial 12-payment commitment you must supply proof to request early release.

End of minimum commitment

Members on a 12-payment contract must complete 12 full Direct Debit payments before KAL will accept a cancellation request. After 12 payments, email [email protected] with 30 days notice. Applicable law: Contract terms agreed when joining; ensure records of Direct Debits are retained.

14-day cooling-off period

If you joined a contract online or off-premises you have a 14 day cooling-off right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. To cancel during the cooling-off period email [email protected] or complete the cancellation form and state you are cancelling under the 14 day cooling-off right. KAL charges a guest fee of £15 per visit for any use during the cooling-off period. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Before cancelling: how to negotiate

KAL does not publish a standard retention offer on its website. If you want to negotiate stay-on terms, email [email protected] and request retention options. Ask for alternatives such as switching from a Full membership to Off-Peak, pausing membership, or a reduced monthly rate for a 6 month trial. Keep written confirmation of any offer before accepting.

Consumer law that applies

Cooling-off and refunds

If you cancel within the 14 day cooling-off period you are entitled to a refund but KAL may charge for services provided during that period. Escalation if KAL refuses

First complain in writing to KAL via [email protected] giving evidence. If unresolved escalate to Citizens Advice for guidance. Confirm end of access and final billing

After KAL accepts the cancellation the 30 day notice runs and access will normally end at the end of that period. Do not cancel your Direct Debit until you have received written confirmation that KAL has processed the cancellation. You remain liable for membership fees until KAL formally accepts the request and the 30 day notice has passed.

Data and membership records

Keep copies of: the sent email or posted letter, KAL confirmation, Direct Debit statements showing the last payment, and any medical or relocation documents used for early termination. Check your bank statements for any unexpected post-cancellation charges and contact KAL immediately if you see one.

Re-joining

If you rejoin later you may be offered a different price. Annual prepay memberships are not refunded and expire after 12 months if not renewed. If you froze your membership during the year ensure your freeze period has been applied correctly before closing the account.
