Cooling-off period (first 14 days)
Consumers have a minimum 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Cancellation is allowed from the policy start date or the date you receive policy documents, whichever is later. During cooling-off you can cancel and normally receive a refund. AA's car insurance terms state a full refund of premium and the £28 AAISL arrangement fee if cover has not commenced. If cover has commenced, a pro-rata refund is provided but AA may retain the £28 arrangement fee and charge a minimum deduction of £15. For general guidance see Citizens Advice - cancelling an insurance policy.
Price increase
If your premium increases mid-term the exact contractual right to cancel depends on your policy terms. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and bans unfair contract terms. If the insurer changes terms contrary to your policy document, raise a complaint and request cancellation and refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Keep the insurer's notification and policy schedule as proof.
Moving/deménagement
If you move address and the risk changes, notify AA and request a policy update. If you decide to cancel because the policy no longer matches your needs, request cancellation and a pro-rata refund where applicable. Provide proof of new address such as a utility bill or tenancy agreement to support the request.
Death of the policyholder
If the policyholder dies, contact AA and provide a copy of the death certificate and proof of authority (executor or personal representative). Insurers typically allow cancellation and refund for unused premium; ask for written confirmation. The insurer's specific process must be requested from customer services as exact refund treatment is not published by AA Insurance.
Legitimate grounds (fraud, misrepresentation)
If AA cancels for fraud or false declarations they may retain fees. If you believe the insurer wrongly cancelled, escalate the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. See the Financial Ombudsman decision cited at FOS case DRN-4721258.
End of annual commitment
Most AA policies are annual. You can cancel before renewal date by contacting AA and requesting non-renewal. Record the cancellation instruction and keep written confirmation showing the policy end date.
