If you move address you must notify Direct Line. You can cancel a home or contents policy when your risk address changes. Provide proof of new address such as a signed tenancy agreement or completion statement. The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 do not set a specific additional right for moving, so follow your policy terms for refunds.
If Direct Line increases your premium mid-term and your policy allows cancellation for price increases, you may cancel and obtain a refund for unused premium where the contract or regulator allows. Provide your renewal notice showing the increase. Relevant law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 concerning unfair terms and the Financial Conduct Authority guidance on renewals.
Immediate cancellation is allowed on death of a policyholder. Required documents: death certificate and executor details. Send these by post or secure message and request a final refund or transfer of policy. The insurer must treat the request in line with policy terms.
Direct Line accepts cancellations for non-payment, fraud findings, or material misrepresentation. If Direct Line cancels for suspected fraud they have, in precedent cases, retained full premium where fraud was proven. Evidence required: documentation demonstrating the ground cited in the cancellation letter. See Financial Ombudsman decisions: DRN-5756462 and DRN-5987418.
If your policy term ends you can choose not to renew. Notify Direct Line before renewal date. Proof: renewal schedule or policy end date. No statutory notice period beyond the renewal terms unless otherwise stated in your policy.
For contracts bought online or off-premises you have a 14 day cooling-off period under The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. For life insurance underwritten by AIG the policy gives 30 days for a full refund if no claim has been paid. Source: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and the AIG policy PDF at AIG policy details.
Direct Line sometimes offers retention options at renewal such as multi-policy discounts, adjusted excess, or telematics offers when you call to state you plan to cancel. There is no published universal retention discount figure from Direct Line. To ask for a retention offer: call with your policy number, state the renewal quote you received from competitors if any, and request a revised premium or additional cover. Keep the agent name and the revised quote in writing.
Use real plan numbers from Direct Line product information and policy feature limits. Example Direct Line home price range shows from £300 to £600 per year for some plans. Example calculations using those figures:
If your Direct Line premium is £600 per year and you cancel, yearly saving = £600 - 0 = £600 per year.
If your Direct Line premium is £300 per year and you switch to an alternative costing £240 per year, yearly saving = £300 - £240 = £60 per year.
Policy cover limits you can compare when shopping: buildings cover up to £1,000,000 and contents up to £175,000 on higher tiers; platinum buildings may be unlimited and liability up to £5,000,000. Use those monetary limits to compare value.
Direct Line sample figures from product documents and price information: Home Silver annual from £300, Home Essentials annual from £300, buildings sum insured up to £750,000, buildings sum insured up to £1,000,000, contents sum insured up to £175,000, liability up to £5,000,000.
Contracts concluded online or off-premises benefit from The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Services usually include a 14 day cancellation period. See the official text at legislation.gov.uk.
Insurance firms are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and prohibits unfair contract terms. For disputes escalate first to Direct Line complaints, then to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Citizens Advice explains how cooling-off refunds work: Citizens Advice on cancelling services.
The Competition and Markets Authority treats hard-to-cancel subscriptions and unclear auto-renewal terms as potential unfair practices. If you suspect unfair renewal or difficulty cancelling, keep written records and escalate to Citizens Advice or the Financial Ombudsman Service.
1. Complain to Direct Line in writing and keep timestamps. 2. If unresolved, complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service with evidence. 3. For qualifying card payments consider Section 75 or a chargeback via your card issuer. Financial Ombudsman case links showing cancellation disputes: DRN-5987418 and DRN-5756462.
Ask Direct Line for a final statement showing premium charged, refunds applied, and any retained amounts. If you paid monthly, confirm whether final instalments are cancelled.
Request copies of your policy schedule, cancellation confirmation and any correspondence. For personal data, exercise your data rights by contacting Direct Line's data protection contact through your policy portal. If Direct Line does not publish an email address, use the secure message centre.
You can request to restart some policies. For AIG-underwritten life insurance you may be able to restart up to 60 days after the first missed premium by clearing arrears, per the AIG policy document. For other products contact Direct Line for reinstatement rules. Source: AIG policy details.
