Cancel by reason

Cooling-off (14-day right)

If you bought a policy online or off-premises you have a 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. For motor policies: if cancelled within the first 14 days of the first period of cover Esure charges an administration fee of £29 and refunds remaining premium minus that fee. For travel single-trip policies, cancelling within 14 days usually gives a full refund if you have not travelled or made/ intend to make a claim. See esure travel policy booklet.

After cooling-off and during first period

For Esure car insurance cancelled during the first period after the 14-day cooling-off period, the administration fee is £67. If a claim has been made Esure may require full premium to be paid. Required documents: proof of policy holder identity and policy number. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Subsequent periods of cover

Cancelling in subsequent periods of cover invokes an administration fee of £36 per Esure motor administration fees. Required documents: policy number and signed instruction. Legal basis: Esure contract terms and Consumer Rights Act 2015 regarding fairness of terms.

Moving address

If you move address you can either update the policy or cancel and buy new cover. Esure may adjust premium; to cancel provide proof of new address such as utility bill or tenancy agreement and written instruction. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 for off-premises contracts if within 14 days; otherwise normal contract terms.

Price increase

If Esure increases your premium at renewal you may cancel at renewal without penalty by providing instruction before the renewal date. Provide renewal notice and cancellation instruction. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 on unfair terms and CMA guidance on auto-renewal practices.

Death of policyholder

If the policyholder dies the executor or next of kin can cancel the policy. Required documents: a copy of the death certificate and proof of authority such as grant of probate or executor ID. Legal basis: standard insurer practice and Consumer Rights Act 2015 for contract performance.

Legitimate ground accepted by Esure

Esure accepts cancellation for cooling-off, policyholder death, and changes in risk such as vehicle disposal. Evidence required varies: death certificate, vehicle disposal receipt or V5C note. Legal basis: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and contract terms. See esure motor admin fees.

Negotiate or save

Before you cancel: negotiate

Esure retention offers are not published centrally. Research does not identify a standard published discount or retention offer. To ask for a saving, call customer services, explain the reason for cancellation, present any lower quote and request a retention offer or multi-car discount. Mention the 15% multicar discount if adding an additional car online. Evidence to prepare: competitor quote, current policy details and renewal notice. If Esure offers a counter-offer ask for written confirmation and a new premium figure.

What cancelling saves you - concrete calculation

Use your actual premium to compute savings. Example using Esure product prices from research: switching from "esure Flex Fully Comprehensive" at £600 per year to the cheapest listed competitor Allianz at £31 per year yields the following arithmetic: £600 - £31 = £569 yearly saving. For the other Esure plan "esure Fully Comprehensive" at £497 per year, switching to Allianz at £31 gives: £497 - £31 = £466 yearly saving. Esure also reports a 15% multicar discount for additional cars which would reduce the above costs if applicable. For monthly payment cost considerations note that paying monthly historically can cost more due to interest and instalment charges; a common comparison point quoted for Esure monthly instalments was 26.5% APR as reported by Which as of December 2025. Sources: Esure pricing and competitor price references and Which review.

What to do after cancelling Esure

Check final bill and refunds

Confirm the administration fee applied and any refund due on your final statement. For car insurance the possible fees are: £29, £67 or £36 depending on timing. If a claim was made Esure may require the full premium to stand.

Proof and documents

Keep copies of confirmation email, the cancellation request, proof of postage and any phone reference number. If Esure does not reply within a reasonable time escalate the complaint in writing and keep dates and names.

Re-activation and replacement cover

If you want to re-activate, request a new quotation; re-activation is not guaranteed and may be treated as a new policy. Arrange replacement cover before the cancellation end date to avoid being uninsured.

Next steps and practical checklist

Use this checklist to complete and confirm your Esure cancellation.

  • Locate your policy number and renewal notice.
  • Decide cancellation date and method (phone, email, post or online).
  • If cancelling within 14 days of online purchase, state you are exercising your cooling-off right and expect the applicable refund minus the £29 fee for car motor policies.
  • If cancelling after 14 days provide signed instruction and request written confirmation.
  • Send postal cancellations by tracked or registered post to Esure, The Observatory, RH2 0SG Reigate, United Kingdom and retain proof of postage.
  • Keep copies of all communications and any reference numbers.
  • Check final premium and refund on your bank or card within 14 working days; if delayed start a complaint to Esure and escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service if unresolved.
