Cancel by reason

Cooling-off period (14 days)

Rule: You have 14 days from purchase to cancel and receive a full refund if you have not made a claim. If you cancel within 14 days, Green Flag will refund the premium in full. This follows the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Required documents: proof of purchase (email or receipt) and your policy number. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Cancelling after cooling-off

Rule: If you cancel after the 14-day cooling-off period you will get a refund for the remaining time on your policy unless you have notified Green Flag of a breakdown. Arrangement and administration fees may be retained unless your policy number begins with GF-POL. Example fees reported: £22, £25 or £28 depending on product. If your policy number begins with GF-POL you will not pay a cancellation fee but arrangement fees paid up front are not refundable after the cooling-off period.

Required documents: policy number and proof of payment. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 for unfair terms and Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 for cooling-off basics.

Death of the subscriber

Rule: Policies may be cancelled on production of a death certificate. Contact Green Flag and provide the policy number and death certificate to request cancellation and any entitlement to refund.

Required documents: copy of the death certificate and proof of relationship or authority to act for the estate.

Price increase

Rule: If Green Flag increases the premium or changes cover in a way that affects you, you can contact Green Flag and request cancellation if the change was material. Keep the renewal notice showing the increase as evidence.

Required documents: renewal letter showing price increase and policy number. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 for contract fairness; escalate to the Financial Ombudsman if unresolved.

Legitimate grounds accepted by Green Flag

Rule: Green Flag may accept cancellation for a change of vehicle or change of address that removes cover eligibility, and for fleet policy changes. Green Flag may also cancel with 7 days notice for reasons such as failure to cooperate, changes in circumstances, threatening behaviour or suspected fraud.

Required documents: proof of change of vehicle (V5C) or new address, or other documentary evidence. Source: Green Flag policy documents.

End of commitment

Rule: Green Flag policies have no fixed minimum commitment for customers to remain; you can cancel at any time. If you pay by installments and cancel after reporting a breakdown you may be liable for outstanding instalments and the total remaining balance under the credit agreement.

Required documents: policy number and proof of payment method. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and contract terms in your policy booklet.

Negotiate or save

Before cancelling: negotiate

Green Flag does not publish standard retention discounts in its public documents. Green Flag advertises a promise to halve renewal quotes from the AA or RAC for equivalent UK coverage; use that promise as negotiation leverage. Steps to ask for a better price: call 0345 877 6334, say you have a cheaper quote from another provider and request a renewal reduction, ask about waiving the arrangement and administration fee, and request a matched or lower written quote. Keep written evidence of any offer.

What cancelling saves

Compute yearly savings using Green Flag published prices.

Examples using published Green Flag prices:

  • Roadside Only: £39.52 per year. Cancelling saves £39.52/year.
  • Rescue Plus: £42.99 per year. Cancelling saves £42.99/year.
  • Recovery: £47.41 per year. Cancelling saves £47.41/year.
  • Recovery Plus: £60.00 per year. Cancelling saves £60.00/year.
  • Comprehensive: £73.06 per year. Cancelling saves £73.06/year.
  • Euro Plus: £100.00 per year. Cancelling saves £100.00/year.

Example of monthly-to-yearly math where monthly is provided in published data: Euro Plus monthly £9.17 x 12 = £110.04/year (published annual figure is £100.00). Use the published annual figure for final comparison.

Cheapest competitor found in research: GoSkippy from £165 per year. Choosing GoSkippy at £165/year vs Green Flag Roadside Only £39.52 yields a difference of £165.00 - £39.52 = £125.48 more per year to switch to GoSkippy. Use competitor quotes to improve your negotiating position.

What to do after cancelling Green Flag

Confirm the cancellation in writing

Request a written confirmation or cancellation reference. Keep the confirmation and any refund details.

Check refunds and final billing

If you cancelled within 14 days expect a full refund. If you cancelled after the cooling-off period expect a pro rata refund unless you reported a breakdown. If you paid by instalments and reported a breakdown you may be liable for outstanding instalments and the remaining balance.

Stop payments correctly

Stopping your Direct Debit or cancelling your continuous payment authority does not automatically cancel the policy. You must notify Green Flag using the contact routes in the cancellation section and obtain confirmation.

Data and reactivation

Ask Green Flag to confirm what personal data they retain and how to request deletion or export. If you want cover again, ask Green Flag about reactivation policies and whether arrangement fees will apply on renewal.

Next steps and practical checklist

Follow this checklist to cancel with minimum risk.

  • Find your policy number and proof of purchase or renewal email.
  • Decide the cancellation method: phone for speed, post for strongest proof.
  • If calling, write the date, time and agent name and ask for a cancellation reference.
  • If emailing or using the web form, keep the sent message and any confirmation email.
  • If posting, use recorded or registered post and keep the receipt.
  • Check whether your policy number begins with GF-POL for fee exemptions.
  • Confirm whether you made a breakdown call out during the policy year; if you did you may not receive a refund.
  • Do not assume stopping Direct Debit cancels the policy without confirmation from Green Flag.
  • If you disagree with the outcome, escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service after 8 weeks or sooner if you receive an unsatisfactory final response.
