Cancel AOL the easy way

AOL provides web services including email, news aggregation, entertainment content and fee-based protection or support bundles. AOL Web Services accounts (email and related services) are separate from broadband access in the UK.

Web cancellation - detailed steps

1. Go to myaccount.aol.com/en-gb and sign in with your primary AOL screen name.
2. Open Subscriptions or Products and locate the fee-based service to cancel (eg McAfee, ID Protection).
3. Select 'Terminate' or 'Cancel' for the product and confirm on-screen.
4. Save any on-screen confirmation and wait for confirmation email.

iOS and Android app cancellations

1. If the subscription was bought through Apple, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, Subscriptions, find AOL subscription and Cancel Subscription.
2. If the subscription was bought via Google Play, open Play Store, Menu, Subscriptions, find AOL subscription and Cancel.
3. After cancelling in the store, verify subscription status in your MyAccount.

Phone cancellations

1. For AOL Broadband call 0844-499-5555 (TalkTalk). Ask for a reference number and the date of termination.
2. For web services, ask support for the correct cancellation route and request confirmation by email.

Email cancellation (recommended for records)

1. Send email to [email protected] from the primary screen name's address.
2. Put 'TERMINATE MY ACCOUNT' in the subject line when closing an AOL Web Services account with multiple screen names.
3. Keep the sent message and any reply as proof.

Post cancellation

1. Write a clear letter stating your full name, primary screen name, account email and 'TERMINATE MY ACCOUNT'.
2. Send as Royal Mail Signed For to AOL, 5 New Street Square, EC4A 3TW London.
3. Keep the signed-for receipt as proof.

Moving address or relocation

AOL does not publish a special relocation cancellation rule for web services. For broadband provided through TalkTalk, check whether your new address is serviceable; contact 0844-499-5555 to discuss options. If you need to cancel because the provider does not serve your new address, keep proof of new address (tenancy agreement or utility bill) and the cancellation reference.

Price increase

If your subscription is auto-renewed and the price increases, AOL will notify you and allow termination within 14 days of receiving the notice. If you terminate in that 14-day window, the new price will not take effect and the subscription ends at the current term end. Required proof: the notification email or notice received. Applicable rule: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and the company policy on auto-renewal as described in AOL terms.

Death of subscriber

AOL does not publish a public procedure for account closure on death of a subscriber. To close an account in this situation, contact AOL support and be prepared to provide a death certificate and proof of authority (executor or next of kin). If closure steps are not published, retain all correspondence. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 for fairness of contract terms where relevant.

Legitimate ground accepted by AOL

From published guidance, AOL accepts termination for non-availability of specified services and allows termination when fee-based services cannot be provided. Specific legitimate grounds and required proof are not fully published by AOL; retain emails or screenshots demonstrating the ground and correspondence with AOL support.

End of minimum commitment

If you have a contract with a defined term (for example some Mail Services with a 12-month term), you may cancel at the end of that minimum commitment without penalty. For Mail Services with a 12-month term, users have an additional right to cancel within 14 days of each auto-renewed term. Required proof: contract terms or renewal notice from AOL.

Cooling-off right (EU/UK consumer right)

For fee-based services bought online, you have a 14-day cooling-off period to cancel without reason, starting from the day the contract was concluded. Reimbursement must be made within 14 days using the same payment method unless otherwise agreed. Before cancelling: how to ask for retention offers

There are no publicly published retention offers from AOL documented in our research. If you want to attempt negotiation, follow these steps: call support and ask for 'retention' or 'loyalty' options; mention competing offers (name the exact monthly price) and request a promotional rate; ask for the offer in writing by email. Keep the support reference number and the written confirmation.

Key UK consumer law

Your rights derive from the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 sets specific cooling-off protections for subscription contracts. Cooling-off, refunds and unfair terms

You have a 14-day cooling-off period for most online contracts; reimbursements must be made within 14 days. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, services must be performed with reasonable care and skill and penalties or disproportionate cancellation fees are not binding. The Competition and Markets Authority flags hard-to-cancel subscriptions and unclear auto-renewal as potential unfair practices.

How to escalate

First complain to AOL in writing and keep records. If unresolved, contact Citizens Advice for guidance and escalate to the appropriate ombudsman if the service falls under its remit. Check access and export data

Before cancellation, export contacts, important emails and any data stored in your AOL account. After cancellation, access may be removed immediately; ensure you have copies of what you need.

Final billing and refunds

If you paid for a fee-based service up front, refunds due under UK law must be reimbursed within 14 days using the same payment method unless you agree otherwise. If your subscription auto-renewed and you exercise your 14-day termination right after a notice of price increase, the new price will not apply and subscription ends at the current term end.

Re-activation and account deletion

If you later want to re-open an AOL account, you may need to create a new account if the original address is deleted. Keep copies of cancellation confirmations in case you need to dispute re-billing.
