For guidance on cancelling services and cooling-off rights see Citizens Advice - cancelling a service and for contract cancellation rules see Which - Consumer Contracts Regulations.
If you are moving you must notify BT and provide the new address. BT will tell you whether Digital Voice can be moved to the new address. If the service cannot be provided at the new address, BT should allow termination without an early exit charge if the contract forbids supply at the new location; provide a proof document such as a signed tenancy agreement or exchange completion statement.
Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015.
If BT raises your price you may have the right to cancel without penalty if your contract includes a unilateral price variation clause that permits exit. Provide the price increase notification from BT as proof. Keep a copy of the letter or email from BT confirming the increase.
Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and Consumer Rights Act 2015.
If the bill payer has died, contact BT with a death certificate and proof of your authority to act. BT accepts death certificate and probate or letter of administration as proof. BT should close the account or transfer it in line with estate instructions.
Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015.
From research, BT accepts reasons such as inability to provide service at new address and price increases. Provide official documents as proof: tenancy or completion documents for moving, BT price change notice for price increases, and death certificate for bereavement cases.
Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
If your minimum term has ended you may cancel without an exit fee. Check your contract for the exact end date and provide your final bill showing the contract expiry if required. Ask BT for a confirmation of out-of-contract status and record the date.
Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
If you signed up by phone, online or mail-order, you usually have a 14-day cooling-off right starting the day after you entered the contract. If you cancel in that period you are entitled to a refund for services not delivered. If you asked BT to start services during the 14-day period, BT can charge for services provided up to cancellation. Use your email or written notice as proof.
Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. For details see Citizens Advice - cancelling a service.
When you call BT to cancel, request retention offers and ask specifically for removal of Digital Voice only or a discounted bundle. Research shows that some customers were told Digital Voice could be cancelled after the order completed, but then experienced difficulty when phoning to remove it. When you speak to BT, ask for a written summary of any retention offer, including monthly price and length.
Known retention behaviour: community reports include statements such as "we are happy for the customer to phone up after the order completes to cancel Digital Voice at no charge" and claims about services being "tied together" driving price changes. Keep any retention offer in writing to compare costs.
Example: Removing the Digital Voice add-on saves approximately £3 per month according to community posts. Yearly saving calculation: 3 x 12 = £36 per year.
Compare with these BT plans (annual math):
Cheapest real alternative plan among listed BT items: Home Phone Service with Pay As You Go calls at £5 per month (£60 per year). If you remove Digital Voice saving £3 per month, net cost for phone features may still be lower by switching plans.
Your rights when cancelling Digital Voice are protected under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 which provides a 14-day cooling-off period for distance and off-premises contracts, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and limits unfair contract terms.
If BT refuses a lawful cancellation or charges disproportionate exit fees, complain to BT in writing. If unresolved, contact Citizens Advice for guidance and escalate to the relevant ombudsman for communications. You may also use payment protections such as chargeback or Section 75 for qualifying card payments.
For information about cancelling and your statutory rights see Which - Consumer Contracts Regulations and Citizens Advice - cancelling a service.
The Competition and Markets Authority flags hard-to-cancel subscriptions and unclear auto-renewal as potentially unfair. Keep written confirmation of cancellations and any auto-renewal terms provided at sign-up to challenge unfair renewal charges.
After cancellation you will receive a final bill listing any outstanding charges, pro-rata amounts and any early exit fees. Retain that bill and compare it with the cancellation confirmation. If you paid in advance, the refund should be processed according to the contract and your statutory rights.
If BT provided any equipment you may be asked to return it. Keep shipment proof for returns. If you wish to re-activate Digital Voice later, contact BT; re-activation terms, prices and any new minimum term will be provided at that time.
Download or save any voicemail or call logs you need before the stop date. After the stop date access to voicemail and call records will be removed. Request copies of records from BT support if required.
