Cooling-off period (first 14 days)
Rule: You may cancel within 14 days of buying a policy if the contract was concluded at a distance (online or phone) under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. If you cancel within this period and no claim has been paid, you are entitled to a full refund of premium.
Required proof documents: proof of purchase (policy schedule), your cancellation request (email or signed letter). Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
Cancellation after cooling-off when no claims made (annual payment)
Rule: If you paid annually and no claim has been made, RSPCA Pet Insurance will refund premiums for the remaining length of the policy period after cancellation.
Required proof documents: policy schedule, proof of payment, cancellation request. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 (service performance and refunds where appropriate).
Cancellation after cooling-off when a claim was paid
Rule: If a claim has been paid during the current policy year, RSPCA Pet Insurance states that no refund will be given, except when the claim value is less than the pro-rata premium for the rest of the policy year - in that case the difference will be refunded.
Required proof documents: claim reference, claim outcome documentation, bank details for a potential refund. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Monthly payment cancellation and outstanding payments
Rule: If you pay monthly and cancel outside the cooling-off period, and a claim has been paid during the current policy year, RSPCA Pet Insurance will deduct any outstanding monthly payments for that period from your final settlement; generally no refund of premium will be given.
Required proof documents: payment history, claim reference, cancellation confirmation. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (contract formation) and Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Pet death, theft or missing
Rule: For annual policies, if your pet has died, been stolen or gone missing and you submit a valid claim for that event, RSPCA Pet Insurance will refund premiums for the remaining length of the current period (unless a claim paid prevents a refund under other rules).
Required proof documents: death certificate or official report, veterinary or police reports, claim form and receipts. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Fraud, untrue or misleading information
Rule: If the policy is cancelled by RSPCA Pet Insurance because of fraud or submission of untrue or misleading information, premiums may not be returned.
Required proof documents: insurer correspondence. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015.
