BECTU is a trade union representing technical and production staff in broadcasting, film, theatre and live entertainment. It offers member representation, legal and workplace advice, negotiated rate cards and optional insurance through Bectu Extra.

Who it serves

BECTU members include staff, contractors and freelancers working across media production sectors. Bectu Extra provides public liability and personal accident insurance for eligible members.

2. Log in with your member credentials.
3. Find account settings or membership renewal/cancellation section.
4. Submit a cancellation or change request including your membership number and preferred end date.

Phone

1. BECTU does not publish a public phone cancellation number in its public resources.
2. If you have a contact phone number received in member communications, call and request cancellation; ask for an email confirmation.
3. Record the date and time of the call and the name of the staff member if provided.

Email

1. Compose an email to [email protected] with subject "Cancel membership" and include: full name, membership number, date of birth and a clear statement "I request cancellation of my BECTU membership effective immediately".
2. Sign the message (typed name acceptable) and keep the sent email.
3. If you receive an automated reply, keep it as proof; if not, request written confirmation in a follow-up email.

Post

1. Write a signed, dated letter with your full name, membership number and clear cancellation instruction "I cancel my membership and ask for confirmation and any due refund".
2. Send by registered post to: BECTU, 80-90 London Road, CR0 2AB Croydon, United Kingdom.
3. Keep proof of postage and delivery receipt; request a written confirmation by email or post.

Cooling-off (14-day right)

If you joined BECTU online, by phone or off-premises you have a 14-day cooling-off right under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. You can cancel without giving a reason and are entitled to a full refund of payments made within 14 days of notification.

Required proof documents: copy of the membership confirmation, date of contract, copy of cancellation notice (email or letter).

Price increase

If BECTU increases subscription fees during a binding period, you may rely on the contract terms. If the increase is applied without adequate notice and you are within an initial or renewal cooling-off window you may cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Keep the notification of the price increase as proof.

Required proof documents: copy of the fee increase notice, your membership contract or renewal terms, request for cancellation.

Moving address

BECTU does not publish a specific policy that moving house automatically permits termination. Use general cancellation channels and include proof of new address if you seek discretionary exception.

Required proof documents: proof of new address such as a utility bill or tenancy agreement. Note: BECTU membership eligibility for Bectu Extra covers residents in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man as published.

Death of subscriber

To cancel a membership due to the death of a member, send a copy of the death certificate and the membership number to [email protected] or by post to the registered address. State that you request termination and information about any refund of dues paid.

Required proof documents: death certificate and the deceased member's membership reference.

Legitimate ground

BECTU does not publish an exhaustive public list of accepted "legitimate grounds" for early termination beyond statutory rights. If you claim a legitimate ground such as serious illness or inability to work in the sector, supply supporting evidence when you contact membership services.

End of commitment

If your membership had a fixed period, cancel at any time before renewal following BECTU instructions in your membership confirmation. BECTU's public pages explain subscription renewal options on their renewal page.

Before cancelling: negotiate

BECTU public resources do not list specific retention offers such as reduced rates or temporary freezes. For negotiation, contact the membership team at [email protected] or through the members area and request options: reduced rate banding, delayed renewal or switch to New Entrant Freelancer membership if eligible. Provide your current earnings band, reasons for leaving and any competing offers. Keep all replies in writing.

What cancelling saves you - exact math

Compute yearly cost using published membership rates. Examples from official pricing:

• New Entrant Freelancer Membership (First Year): £5.00 x 12 = £60.00 per year.
• Standard Membership (Gross annual earnings £12,501 6 6 £15,000): £10.00 x 12 = £120.00 per year.
• Standard Membership (Gross annual earnings £35,001 and above): £29.17 x 12 = £350.04 per year.
• Bectu Extra Membership (add-on): £40.00 annual fixed fee.

Example saving when cancelling a mid-band standard member: If you pay £19.58 per month (gross earnings £25,001 6 6 £27,500) you save £19.58 x 12 = £234.96 per year by cancelling the standard membership. If you also opt out of Bectu Extra at £40.00, total annual saving could be £234.96 + £40.00 = £274.96.

Key UK consumer law

Your cancellation and refund rights are protected by the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and by provisions in the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 on cooling-off. Services must be performed with reasonable care and skill under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

How to escalate a problem

If BECTU does not respond or you disagree with their decision, take these steps: 1) Complain directly to BECTU in writing and keep dates. 2) Seek guidance from Citizens Advice: Citizens Advice - cancelling a service. 3) Use bank chargeback or Section 75 protection for qualifying card payments if you paid with a credit card and the criteria are met. 4) If a legally binding dispute remains, consider small claims court; retain all communications and proof.

Check final billing and refunds

After cancellation, confirm the final date of membership and request a written statement of any refund due. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations refunds must be returned within 14 days of cancellation notification when the right to cancel applies.

Access and data

Ask BECTU to confirm what access you retain to the members portal and whether personal data will be deleted or retained. You can request a copy of your personal data under data rights and ask for deletion if retention is not required for legal or contractual reasons.

Re-activation

To rejoin, follow the standard join process on the BECTU site. If you left mid-year and paid Bectu Extra as an annual fixed fee, coverage runs to December 31 and may not be refunded in full if purchased mid-year; check the Bectu Extra terms on the official page.
