Cancel NEU Membership the easy way

Overview

The NEU Membership is the subscription to services offered by the National Education Union structure represented in the UK. It provides representation, legal support for employment matters, local and national campaigning, and membership tiers for teachers, support staff and retired members.

Who it is for

NEU Membership covers active teachers, support staff, early career teachers, students in initial teacher training and retired members. Specific reduced rates exist for part-time staff and those on leave.

How NEU membership is structured

The membership year runs from 1 September to 31 August. Members pay a national subscription plus a local subscription set by the local district (typically between 5% and 20% of the national rate).

Web (online form)

1. Open the NEU website and find the membership cancellation or membership contact page. Official rule details are available in the NEU rule book: NEU rule book (PDF).
2. Complete the online cancellation form, provide your membership number and reason for cancelling. Accepted reasons include financial hardship, value for money, no workplace representative, dissatisfaction with policy or service.
3. Submit the form. Keep a screenshot and wait for a confirmation email from NEU.
4. If you do not receive confirmation within 7 days, follow up by emailing [email protected].

Email

1. Compose an email to [email protected] including your full name, membership number, postal address and clear statement to cancel your membership.
2. State the reason from the NEU list if you wish; examples accepted by NEU include inability to pay due to financial hardship or choosing retired or associate membership.
3. Send the email and save the sent message.
4. Keep the NEU reply as proof of cancellation.

Post

1. Write a signed cancellation letter addressed to NEU Membership, include your membership number and reason for cancellation.
2. Send by recorded delivery to NEU Membership, Mabledon Place, WC1H 9BD London, United Kingdom.
3. Retain the recorded delivery receipt and a copy of the signed letter.
4. Allow up to 14 days for the organisation to process postal cancellations; follow up by email if no confirmation arrives.

Phone

1. NEU does not publish a dedicated cancellation phone line. If you prefer phone contact, request a direct number by emailing [email protected].
2. If a phone conversation occurs, request an email confirmation of the cancellation and keep the date and time of the call and the agent name.

iOS and Android

1. There is no official NEU app listed for iOS or Android; use the NEU website or email to cancel.
2. Open your mobile browser, complete the online form or send the cancellation email from your mobile device.
3. Keep the confirmation email as proof.

Moving (change of country or address)

If you are moving abroad and membership cannot be maintained, state the new address and provide proof such as a tenancy agreement or new employment contract. NEU specific migration rules are Not published by NEU Membership; use email [email protected] to notify change.

Price increase

If NEU increases the subscription mid-contract and you wish to cancel for that reason, provide the notification you received and a clear statement of cancellation. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 protects against unfair contract terms; if the increase breaches your contract you can challenge it under that Act.

Death of subscriber

If the member has died, a close relative should email [email protected] or send a postal notification including a copy of the death certificate and the member number. NEU will process termination on receipt of documentation.

Legitimate ground accepted by NEU

NEU accepts specific reasons recorded on its cancellation form. Research shows acceptable reasons include inability to pay fees due to financial hardship, subscription fees too high or poor value for money, no workplace representative, dissatisfaction with union policy and dissatisfaction with the service received. For maternity, shared parental or adoption leave, members do not pay fees for up to 18 months; provide the relevant HR or payroll evidence for leave.

End of commitment

If your membership was purchased for a fixed term and the term ends, notify NEU by email or via the online form to stop renewal. Where renewal is automatic, you have rights under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 to receive renewal information and a renewal cooling-off notice.

Cooling-off rights

For contracts concluded at a distance, consumers have a 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. To cancel within 14 days, communicate by email, online portal or post. Before you cancel: how to negotiate with NEU

NEU encourages members to explore alternatives before cancelling. The organisation lists the following retention or alternative options: switch to retired membership at £1 per year for eligible members, apply for fee suspension during maternity, shared parental or adoption leave for up to 18 months, request reduced rates for part-time work, or move to associate membership after leaving education employment. Standard Membership (Above 0.6 contracted hours): £24.13 x 12 = £289.56 per year.

Support Staff (21 hours or more per week): £12.50 x 12 = £150.00 per year.

United Kingdom consumer protections relevant to memberships include the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 which grant a 14-day cooling-off period for distance contracts and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and limits unfair contract terms.

Auto-renewal and unfair terms

The Competition and Markets Authority treats hard-to-cancel subscriptions and unclear auto-renewal terms as potential unfair practices. If NEU uses auto-renewal without clear renewal notices and an easy cancellation route, you can complain to Citizens Advice for guidance and escalate to the CMA if necessary.

How to escalate

Data and final billing

Re-activation
