Cancel by reason

Moving address

If you are relocating and the service you pay for cannot be used as agreed you should provide proof of new address such as a council tax bill or utility bill dated within the last three months and a signed cancellation request. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill; if RCI cannot deliver the service because of a material change, supply the address proof and ask for termination under the same Act.

Price increase

If RCI increases membership fees or changes core contract terms and you do not accept the increase, send a written cancellation citing the contract change and include the notice from RCI showing the increase. If the change amounts to an unfair term you can rely on the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If the change was not properly notified you may have extended cancellation rights under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.

Death of the subscriber

To cancel after a member dies, send a copy of the death certificate and a written request from the executor or next of kin. Include membership details and proof of relationship. RCI's own public documentation does not publish exact bereavement procedures, so send documentation by email or registered post and request confirmation.

Legitimate ground

Legitimate grounds include inability to use the service through serious illness or disability supported by medical evidence, or material breach by RCI of the contract. Provide medical certificates or correspondence showing breach. Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies to performance and unfair contract terms.

End of commitment

If your membership term (for example a 1-year Weeks Standard self-enrolment) reaches its expiry, you can refuse renewal and cancel before the renewal date. Provide written notice ahead of the renewal date according to your membership terms; if no notice period is published, notify RCI in writing before the next renewal payment.

Cooling-off (14 day right)

Distance or off-premises contracts are covered by The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 which provide a 14 day cancellation period for most contracts concluded at a distance. To use the 14 day right, inform RCI in writing within 14 days from the day the contract was entered into. If RCI failed to provide required pre-contract information, the 14 day period can be extended up to 12 months under the same Regulations. See Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Negotiate or save

Before cancelling: negotiate

Research did not show public retention offers from RCI. Members should request retention or downgrade options by emailing [email protected] or calling support and asking for a retention offer. Suggested script: "I want to cancel my membership. Before I do, are there downgrade, suspension or one-time payment options to keep my membership at a lower cost? Please list any offers and the exact fee." If RCI offers a reinstatement fee only, note that a reinstatement fee of £150 is published for lapsed memberships.

What cancelling saves you - example math

Example: cancelling an RCI Weeks Annual Renewal (1-year) at £75 saves £75 per year. If you currently pay RCI Points from £89 per year and cancel a Points plan at £89 you save £89 per year. If you cancel a Weeks Standard 1-year self-enrolment at £144 you save £144 per year. Calculation examples:

  • RCI Weeks Annual Renewal 1-year: £75 saved per year. Calculation: 1 x £75 = £75/year.
  • RCI Points (lower band): £89 saved per year. Calculation: 1 x £89 = £89/year.
  • RCI Weeks Standard 1-year self-enrolment: £144 saved per year. Calculation: 1 x £144 = £144/year.

Cheapest realistic alternative in the research: Autobooks bookkeeping (not a timeshare exchange but listed as a competitor in the research) at £1,068 + VAT annually; this demonstrates that direct service substitutes differ by sector and price. Use the math above to decide which membership cost you will remove.

What to do after cancelling RCI

Confirm refunds and final billing

After cancellation, retain the cancellation confirmation and monitor your bank or card for refunds. Statutory refunds where applicable must be made within 14 days of being informed of the cancellation. For RCI Points refunds note: reservations cancelled 90 days or more before the start may receive a full refund of Points which will be Limited Use Points; transaction fee refunds are available only if cancelled by the end of the business day immediately following the booking.

Access and data

Remove any saved payment methods from your RCI account and request confirmation that recurring payments are stopped. If you want your data deleted, submit a data subject request to RCI support and keep a copy of the request.

Re-activation and reinstatement

If you later want to re-join, a reinstatement fee of £150 applies to lapsed memberships according to research notes. Check membership pages at RCI before re-enrolling to confirm current fees and options.

Next steps and practical checklist

Use this checklist to cancel with evidence and protect your rights.

  • Locate your membership number and booking reference.
  • Decide cancellation channel (online recommended for instant proof).
  • Save or print the cancellation confirmation and any email responses.
  • If cancelling a booking, check whether you are within the 24 hour Grace Period for an Extra Holiday full refund.
  • If cancelling RCI Points reservation, check 90+ days rule for full Points refund and limited use status.
  • Remove stored payment methods and stop direct debits if required.
  • If you paid by card and are refused a refund, prepare to contact your card issuer for chargeback or Section 75 where applicable.
  • Keep copies of all correspondence for at least six months.
