Cancel Tate the easy way

Overview

Tate is a network of four British art museums and a registered charity that holds and shows national collections of British art and international modern and contemporary art. Tate runs membership programmes, a retail shop, ticketed exhibitions and public programming across Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives.

Who uses Tate

Tate attracts art enthusiasts, families, students and international visitors. Membership offers include free exhibition entry, magazine subscriptions and shop discounts targeted at frequent visitors and supporters.

Quick facts

Cancel online via membership pages

1. Go to the Tate membership information or shop membership page: shop.tate.org.uk/membership.
2. Log in to your membership account if you have one and find renewal or manage membership settings.
3. If a direct online cancellation button is not visible, contact Tate via the membership page instructions or by email to [email protected] with your membership number and request.
4. Keep any confirmation email or screen capture showing the cancellation request.

Cancel by email

1. Compose an email to [email protected] with your full name, membership number, postal address and the sentence: "Please cancel my Tate membership effective at the end of the current Membership Period."
2. Ask for written confirmation and a date when the membership will end.
3. Save the sent message and any reply as proof.

Cancel by post

1. Write a signed letter including your full name, membership number, postal address and the statement: "I cancel my Tate membership and request it not be renewed."
2. Send by registered post to: Tate, Millbank, SW1P 4RG London, United Kingdom.
3. Retain the registered-post receipt and any reply from Tate.

Cancel a Direct Debit renewal

1. If you pay by Direct Debit, notify Tate at the earliest opportunity and preferably at least 10 days before the end of the Membership Period to prevent renewal.
2. Contact your bank to stop future payments if Tate does not confirm cancellation; keep bank confirmation.
3. Keep Tate email confirmation of cancellation and your bank evidence.

Phone cancellations

1. Tate does not publish a dedicated cancellation phone number in membership guidance; check Tate FAQ - members for contact routes.
2. If you call, request an email confirmation and note the agent name and time of the call.
3. If Tate cannot provide immediate confirmation, follow up in writing to [email protected].

Moving abroad

If you move outside the UK and want to cancel membership, provide proof of new address such as a utility bill or tenancy agreement. Tate membership terms do not publish a specific automatic right to cancel for moving; submit supporting documents and request cancellation. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 where a service bought at a distance may have a 14-day cooling-off period if applicable. See Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Price increase

If Tate increases membership prices at renewal, you have the right to refuse the new price. Provide your renewal notice and request non-renewal in writing. Tate must send renewal and cancellation information for renewal cooling-off as required under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Death of the subscriber

To cancel a membership after the member's death, supply a copy of the death certificate and the membership number and relationship to the deceased. Tate's refund policy does not promise refunds for memberships once paid, but provide evidence and request a discretionary refund or transfer; statutory rights may apply.

Legitimate ground accepted by Tate

Tate accepts statutory cooling-off and will consider cancellations where there is a clear statutory right to cancel. For membership payments already taken, Tate states membership fees are non-refundable once payment has been received, subject to statutory cancellation rights. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 and Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

End of commitment

To stop auto-renewal at the end of your membership period, notify Tate at least 10 days before the end of the Membership Period if you pay by Direct Debit. For non-Direct Debit payers, membership will be cancelled if a new payment is not received after Tate sends a renewal reminder.

Cooling-off and trial memberships

If you joined online, you may have a 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 unless you accepted immediate performance of digital services. New member trial offers (for example a 3-month trial available until 31 January 2026) auto-renew to full membership; you must cancel before auto-renewal if you do not want to continue. Before you cancel: try to negotiate

Tate does not publish a standard retention discount or guaranteed retention offer in public documents. You can ask for options by emailing [email protected] or using the membership contact form on shop.tate.org.uk/membership. When you contact Tate, state clearly that you are considering cancellation and request any available discounted renewal, pause or alternative membership level. Keep any written offer as proof.

What cancelling saves you - maths

Compute your annual saving from actual published prices:

• Standard membership monthly: £8 x 12 = £96 per year if paid monthly.
• Standard membership annual: £84 per year (pay annual Direct Debit).
• Member & Guest annual: £130 per year.
• Member, Guest & Extra Card annual: £162 per year.
• Extra Tate Liverpool Card add-on: £12 per year.

Example saving: cancelling an annual Standard membership at £84 saves £84 per year. Cancelling a Member & Guest membership at £130 saves £130 per year.

Cheapest real alternative from competitors (business/comparison data): GoForma priced at £22 per month or £264 per year is not a membership alternative to Tate but appears in competitor data; the lowest-cost Tate-adjacent option is Tate Collective for 16-25 year olds at £0, which provides £5 tickets for exhibitions and online scheme benefits.

Primary UK consumer law

Your rights when cancelling are protected by the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and by the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 introduced stronger rules on renewal cooling-off and information around renewals; see Digital Markets Act section 261 and section 264 for renewal cooling-off requirements.

Cooling-off period

The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 provide a 14-day cancellation right for many distance or off-premises contracts. If you exercised digital services immediately with your express consent, that right may not apply. See the full text at legislation.gov.uk.

Escalation steps

If Tate refuses a lawful right to cancel or refund, escalate by contacting Citizens Advice for next steps at Citizens Advice - cancelling services. For card payments consider Section 75 or a chargeback through your card issuer. If a contractual term imposes an unfair cancellation penalty, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 may render it unenforceable.

Access and membership end date

After cancellation your membership typically remains valid until the end of the current Membership Period. Confirm the exact end date in Tate's written confirmation.

Data, receipts and final billing

Save your cancellation confirmation, receipts and any bank statements showing stop of Direct Debit. Request a final statement from Tate if necessary. For shop purchases or tickets, Tate's terms say they do not offer refunds on tickets but may refund orders cancelled for pricing errors; see Tate shop terms.

Re-activation

You can re-join Tate at any time. If you had a trial that auto-renewed, re-joining may be at the then-current price. Keep evidence of past membership if you are negotiating a renewal discount.
