Post - registered letter (recommended)

1. Write a short letter stating your full name, membership number if known, date of resignation and a clear statement: "I hereby resign my membership of Unite Union with immediate effect."

Phone

1. Call the union support number if you have it. If not published, use email or post first.
2. State your name and intention to resign and ask the agent to confirm the next steps.
3. After the call, send a written resignation by email or post and reference the phone call date and agent name.

1. Log into the member portal if you have credentials, locate the membership or account settings section and follow the cancellation or resignation flow.
2. Download or screenshot the confirmation page.
3. Follow up by email if no confirmation is received within 7 days.

Resigning at any time - statutory right

Under the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 members have the right to resign their union membership at any time. The union cannot prevent resignation. To make resignation effective you must give written notice to the union; verbal notice alone is not sufficient. Required document: a signed written notice or email containing your full name and clear statement of resignation.

Moving abroad

If you move outside Unite Union's coverage area you may resign by sending written notice and supplying proof of new address such as a tenancy agreement or utility bill. Required documents: signed resignation letter and a copy of proof of new address.

Price increase

If Unite Union raises contributions after you join, you may rely on consumer contract rules if the rise is part of an ongoing subscription contract. Request written confirmation of the change from the union and, if the contract was concluded at distance, you may have cancellation rights under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Death of a member

In the event of a member's death the membership ends. The personal representative should send a copy of the death certificate and a short resignation/termination notice. Required documents: death certificate and signed letter from the next of kin or executor.

Legitimate ground or dispute with service

If you believe Unite Union has failed to deliver contracted services with reasonable care and skill, you can resign and raise a formal complaint under Consumer Rights Act 2015. Required documents: signed resignation letter, summary of complaint, and any supporting correspondence or evidence. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies to services performed with reasonable care and skill.

Cooling-off period

Where membership or subscription was bought at a distance or off-premises, you have a 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 to cancel without charge. If the trader failed to provide cancellation rights at the time of sale the cancellation period may be extended up to 12 months. Before cancelling: negotiate

Unite Union does not publish standard retention offers in public reviews and there are no widely reported formal retention discounts in the research. If you want to keep cover at lower cost, ask for reduced contribution rates, a temporary suspension or a downgrade of membership level. Send an email to [email protected] requesting the union's retention options, citing your membership details and the date you want the change to take effect. Keep all replies in writing.

Full member example: £12.00 x 12 = £144.00 per year. Standard member example: £6.00 x 12 = £72.00 per year. If you resign from a Full member payment of £12.00 to zero, yearly saving is 12.00 x 12 = £144.00. If you downgrade from Full (£12.00) to Standard (£6.00), yearly saving is (12.00 - 6.00) x 12 = £72.00.

Key United Kingdom laws

Your cancellation rights are supported by UK law. The Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 gives members the right to resign from a union at any time. The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 give a 14-day cooling-off right for distance and off-premises contracts. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and restricts unfair contract terms.

Cooling-off and refunds

How to escalate

Obtain written confirmation

After you send your written resignation keep the proof of sending and request a written confirmation email or letter from Unite Union stating the effective date of cancellation. Keep this confirmation for 12 months.

Final billing and refunds

If you paid monthly and resign mid-month the membership continues until the end of that paid month; you should not be billed for subsequent months. If you are within a 14-day cooling-off period and paid at a distance you may be entitled to a refund within 14 days of the union receiving your cancellation notice under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Data and accounts

Ask Unite Union to delete non-essential personal data, close associated accounts and confirm deletion in writing. Include your full name, membership number and a clear data deletion request in writing. Keep copies of all correspondence.

Rejoining

If you decide to rejoin later, request the union's rejoin process in writing. Rejoining terms, rates and waiting periods are set by the union and may differ from your previous membership.
