Cancel WordPress the easy way

Overview

WordPress refers to two related offerings: the open source project at wordpress.org and the hosted service WordPress.com operated by Automattic. WordPress.com offers Free and paid plans that include hosting, themes and optional e-commerce tools.

Core uses

Individuals and businesses use WordPress to create blogs, brochure websites, stores and web apps. Paid WordPress.com plans add custom domains, extra storage, plugin support (Business plan and above) and commerce features.

Company facts

Web cancellation (official)

1. Sign in to your account at WordPress.com.
2. Open the Billing section of your account dashboard.
3. Select Active upgrades and click the specific purchase or renewal you want to cancel.
4. Choose Cancel in the Cancel subscription section.
5. Select Remove plan and claim refund if you are within the refund window, then click Continue removal to complete. You will receive on-screen confirmation. See Official refunds.

iOS cancellation

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
2. Find WordPress or the related App Store subscription.
3. Tap Cancel Subscription to stop auto-renewal. For refunds, contact Apple support.

Android cancellation

1. Open Google Play Store, tap profile, then Payments and subscriptions > Subscriptions.
2. Select WordPress subscription and Cancel subscription.
3. Request refunds through Google Play if eligible within Google Play refund window.

Email and written cancellation

1. If you prefer written notification, send a clear request to WordPress support or to the EU representative address noted on WordPress help pages.
2. Keep a copy of the message and delivery receipts. For EU/UK withdrawal rights, see Right to withdraw.

Postal cancellation

1. Send a registered letter to WordPress, 72 Hammersmith Road, W14 8TH London, United Kingdom to request cancellation in writing.
2. Include account email, plan name, purchase date and statement that you wish to Cancel the subscription.
3. Keep proof of posting and allow 14 days for response.

Cooling-off and right to withdraw

Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 you have a 14 day cooling-off period for contracts concluded at a distance. For digital content, the right to withdraw is waived once the content is made available immediately if you gave express consent. WordPress lists a 7 day refund window for monthly plans and a 14 day refund window for annual, two-year and three-year plans. See WordPress right to withdraw.

Price increase

If WordPress notifies you of a price increase, check the contract terms for the right to cancel. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 requires retailers to provide renewal cooling-off notices for subscription renewals; you may cancel during renewal cooling-off without penalty.

Moving / change of address

Moving alone is not an automatic ground for refund. Provide proof such as a dated utility bill and a clear request to Cancel if you are unable to use the service because of geographic restrictions. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 for service performance.

Death of the subscriber

For death of the account holder, provide a copy of the death certificate and the account holder details to support for cancellation and billing review. WordPress does not publish a specific death policy; use written contact or the registered postal address.

End of commitment

If your paid plan term expires, the subscription will not renew if you Cancel before renewal. Annual plan length is 12 months; multi-year plans last 24 or 36 months as purchased. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 for contract information.

Legitimate ground accepted by WordPress

WordPress accepts cancellations via the billing interface, App Store or Play Store cancellations, and written withdrawal requests to the EU representative address for European consumers. For refunds follow the guidelines at Official refunds.

Before you cancel - negotiate

WordPress does not publicly list retention discounts. If you want to keep the service, contact support via the account Help menu and ask for a plan downgrade or promotional pricing. If you purchased via Apple or Google Play ask those platforms about refund or billing adjustments.

What cancelling saves you - yearly calculation

Compute yearly savings by cancelling recurring plans you no longer need. Examples based on published prices:

• Personal plan: £4 x 12 = £48 per year saved.
• Premium plan: £8 x 12 = £96 per year saved.
• Business plan: £25 x 12 = £300 per year saved.
• Commerce plan: £45 x 12 = £540 per year saved.

Cheapest real alternative from competitors: HostPapa WP Essentials at £1.33 per month equals £1.33 x 12 = £15.96 per year. Saving example: cancelling WordPress Premium (£96/year) and moving to HostPapa WP Essentials (£15.96/year) saves £96 - £15.96 = £80.04 per year.

Key UK laws and regulator

The main protections are the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) enforces rules on auto-renewal and hard-to-cancel subscriptions. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 added explicit renewal cooling-off protections. Statutory rights and refunds

You have a 14 day cooling-off period for distance contracts. Refunds must be processed within 14 days of being informed of cancellation, except where digital content rights to withdraw are waived. WordPress refunds policy gives 7 days for monthly plans and 14 days for annual and multi-year plans; refunds inside those windows are full and not prorated. See WordPress refunds.

Escalation route

First complain to WordPress support. If unresolved, get advice from Citizens Advice and report unfair auto-renewal or hard-to-cancel practices to the CMA. For card payments consider Section 75 or chargeback with your card issuer if eligible.

Access and content

Files, posts and media remain available until the subscription expiry date for paid plans. Export your site content using Tools > Export or download a full backup before the expiry date to preserve data.

Final billing and refunds

If you requested a refund within the eligible window, expect a full refund for the eligible items. Refunds for annual plans must be requested within 14 days of purchase or renewal; monthly plans within 7 days. For partial eligibility, WordPress refunds eligible items only. Processing time may vary by payment provider.

Re-activation and domain names

If you re-subscribe within a grace window you may regain site content. Domain registrations purchased through WordPress may have separate transfer or renewal rules; transfer domains away before expiry to avoid automatic renewal charges.

Use this checklist when cancelling to ensure you capture evidence and avoid unexpected charges.

• Log in to WordPress.com and go to Billing > Active upgrades; start the cancellation there.
• If you want a refund, choose Remove plan and claim refund during cancellation and keep the confirmation screen.
• Save confirmation emails and screenshots showing the date and plan cancelled.
• If you subscribed via Apple or Google Play, cancel using the App Store or Play Store subscription settings and save the store confirmation.
• Export site content: Tools > Export to download posts and media before plan expiry.
