Cancel GitHub the easy way

Overview

GitHub is a software-as-a-service platform for hosting Git repositories, code review, CI and collaboration. It is used by individual developers and teams for source control, issue tracking and automation.

Core uses

Teams use GitHub for private and public repositories, pull requests, Actions CI, Packages, and integration with development workflows. GitHub also offers AI tools such as GitHub Copilot and enterprise security features.

Business positioning

GitHub is owned by Microsoft and serves both individual developers and enterprise customers with plans ranging from free personal accounts to organisation-level and security-focused add-ons.

Web - cancel account or subscription

1. Sign in at github.com with the account you want to cancel.
2. Open the profile dropdown in the global navigation bar and select Settings.
3. For subscriptions: go to Billing and plans and choose to cancel seats or downgrade the organisation plan.
4. For account deletion: in Account Settings find the account deletion link and follow the "Delete account" flow; confirm when prompted.
5. Save any confirmation screenshot and copy any emailed confirmation. GitHub states the Settings screen has a simple cancellation link.

iOS - cancel Copilot or App Store billing

1. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap your profile, then Subscriptions.
3. Find the GitHub Copilot subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.
4. Keep the App Store cancellation receipt as proof.

Android - cancel via Google Play

1. Open Google Play Store on your Android device.
2. Tap your profile, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
3. Select the Copilot subscription and Cancel subscription.
4. Keep the Google Play cancellation receipt as proof.

Phone - why it does not work

1. GitHub does not offer telephone support and will not cancel accounts by phone.
2. Do not call expecting cancellation; use the web Settings flow or in-service support.

Email and web support forms

1. GitHub will not cancel accounts in response to a simple email or phone request.
2. Use the in-service support channels after signing in, or follow instructions in the Terms of Service if you need account owner data within 90 days of deletion. See the Terms of Service at GitHub Terms of Service.

Postal cancellation

1. Send a registered letter to: GitHub, Crown Way, CF14 3UZ Cardiff, United Kingdom.
2. Include your account username, email address associated with the account and a clear statement you wish to cancel or delete the account. Keep the registered mail receipt.

Moving abroad or change of workplace

Rule - GitHub does not publish a special cancellation pathway for moving. The owner must cancel via their account Settings. If you are leaving an organisation, transfer repository ownership before cancellation to preserve code. There is no published GitHub form that cancels an account solely for moving.

Price increase

Rule - If a paid GitHub plan price increases, you may cancel before the change takes effect. Check your billing notifications in the account and cancel seats or subscriptions from Billing. GitHub bills in advance and does not provide refunds for partial months, but cancellation prevents future charges.

Death of subscriber

Rule - GitHub does not publish a public process for cancelling accounts solely due to account owner death. The documented cancellation method is owner-driven via Settings. GitHub will not cancel accounts in response to a generic email or phone request.

Legitimate ground accepted by GitHub

Rule - Research does not list specific legitimate grounds accepted by GitHub beyond account owner requests via Settings. GitHub will delete profile and repository content within 90 days after cancellation. Content contributed to other users or forks will not be removed automatically.

End of commitment

Rule - Where you have paid for a period (monthly or yearly), GitHub keeps the service active until the end of the paid billing period. GitHub states there are no refunds for partial months or unused time with an open account.

Cooling-off period

Rule - The 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 applies to distance contracts. For digital content, the right may be lost if the consumer agreed to immediate supply and acknowledged loss of the right. GitHub bills in advance and states monthly or yearly plans are non-refundable, but statutory cooling-off rights apply where they are not validly waived.

Before cancelling: negotiate

GitHub does not publish retention offers or standard discounts as part of its public cancellation flow. There are no reported, documented retention coupons from official sources in the research. You can take specific actions before cancelling to reduce cost:

• Remove paid seats in an organisation to reduce month-to-month cost.
• Downgrade from Team at £21 per user per month to Free where appropriate.
• Switch monthly billing to annual billing if GitHub offers an explicit annual discount in your billing UI.

To request account-level exceptions or data assistance, use the in-service support channels while signed in. GitHub does not accept cancellation by email or phone.

What cancelling saves - yearly calculations

Examples of annual savings when you cancel or downgrade from common GitHub plans:

• GitHub Team: £21 x 12 = £252 per user per year. Cancelling one Team seat saves £252 per year.
• GitHub Pro: £4 x 12 = £48 per year. Cancelling Pro saves £48 per year.
• GitHub Copilot Individual Pro: £10 x 12 = £120 per year. Cancelling Copilot Pro saves £120 per year.
• GitHub Copilot Individual Pro+: £39 x 12 = £468 per year. Cancelling Pro+ saves £468 per year.

Cheapest real alternative from the competitors in research:

• gitbuild.dev annual: £68.30 per year - lowest annual price cited among competitors. Switching from one Copilot Pro+ at £468 per year to gitbuild.dev at £68.30 would save £468 - £68.30 = £399.70 per year.

Key UK consumer laws

The main protections available in the United Kingdom are the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. The CMA enforces rules on unfair subscription and auto-renewal practices under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.

Cooling-off and refund rights

The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give a 14-day cooling-off period for many online contracts. For digital content the right can be lost if you consented to immediate supply and acknowledged the loss. See the Regulations at Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. How to escalate

First complain to GitHub via the account support channels. If unresolved, contact Citizens Advice for guidance and escalate to the Competition and Markets Authority for unfair subscription practices. For qualifying card payments consider Section 75 or a chargeback via your card issuer. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers unfair contract terms that attempt to impose disproportionate cancellation penalties.

Data and access

After cancellation your full profile and repository content will be deleted within 90 days. Some encrypted backups may remain beyond 90 days and cannot be recovered. Content you contributed to other users' repositories or that has been forked by other users will not be deleted automatically.

Final billing and refunds

GitHub bills monthly or yearly in advance and states there are no refunds or credits for partial months, downgrade refunds, or unused months with an open account. Your service remains active until the end of the paid billing period. For billing disputes, use the in-service billing history and invoices as evidence.

Recovery and requesting account contents

Upon request within 90 days of cancellation, GitHub will make a reasonable effort to provide an account owner with a copy of lawful, non-infringing account contents. After 90 days recovery is not guaranteed. Retain local clones and exports of repositories before cancelling.

Follow this checklist before you cancel to preserve code, history and organisation continuity.

• Export repositories - git clone --mirror or use the GitHub export tools to make local backups.
• Transfer ownership - move repositories to another user or organisation if needed.
• Backup issues and wikis - export issues and wiki content manually or with tooling.
• Revoke tokens and SSH keys - remove any deployed keys or personal access tokens you no longer want active.
• Disable paid seats - remove or reduce paid seats in Billing to stop future charges.
• Download billing invoices - save billing records for disputes and proof of payment.
• Request account contents within 90 days after cancellation if needed - use GitHub's site policy channels.
