Cancel Microsoft Office the easy way

Overview

Microsoft Office (branded Microsoft 365 for subscription plans) is a suite of productivity apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and cloud services such as OneDrive and Teams. Plans range from free web-only tiers to paid Personal, Family, Premium, Business and Enterprise subscriptions.

Microsoft 365 plans provide desktop and web apps, cloud storage, and AI features such as Copilot in qualifying plans. Business and enterprise tiers include advanced security and administration tools.

Web (Microsoft account)

1. Go to Microsoft cancel subscription help.
2. Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the subscription.
3. Open Services & subscriptions, locate the subscription, select Manage then Cancel.
4. Follow on-screen prompts. Capture a screenshot of final confirmation and note any reference number.

iOS (Apple App Store)

1. If you purchased through Apple, open the App Store and tap your profile.
2. Tap Subscriptions and find Microsoft 365, then Cancel Subscription.
3. If you cannot cancel there, contact Apple Support because Microsoft cannot cancel App Store purchases.

Android (Google Play)

1. Open Google Play, tap your profile then Payments & subscriptions.
2. Tap Subscriptions, select the Microsoft subscription and tap Cancel subscription.
3. If problems persist, contact Google Play support because purchases via Google Play are managed by Google.

Phone

1. Use the Microsoft support portal to request a call-back or view local contact options.
2. Provide account details and ask the agent to cancel the subscription and confirm refund eligibility.
3. Record the case number and time of the call.

Email and Support Ticket

1. Open Microsoft support via your account and submit a subscription cancellation request.
2. Attach proof of purchase if requested.
3. Keep the support ticket reference and any reply email as proof.

Post

1. Write a clear signed statement requesting cancellation and include account details and purchase date.
2. Send by registered post to: Microsoft Office, Thames Valley Park, RG6 1WG Reading, United Kingdom.
3. Keep the Royal Mail registered delivery receipt as proof of notification.

Moving / change of country

If you move country, cancellation method depends on where you purchased the subscription. If bought directly from Microsoft, cancel via your Microsoft account. Death of subscriber

For subscription cancellation after the death of an account holder, contact Microsoft support and provide a copy of the death certificate and proof of executor authority or probate to request account closure and refund assessment. Legitimate grounds accepted by Microsoft

Microsoft accepts cancellations made through the account interface and refunds are decided based on timing and purchase channel. For purchases via Apple or Google, those stores control refund and cancellation rights. Required documents: order confirmation, proof of purchase, account email. End of commitment

If you are on an annual business or enterprise commitment, canceling mid-term may not stop billing if the contract required a 12-month commitment. Review your contract; business/enterprise plans are often annual commitments and are paid yearly. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 regarding service performance and unfair terms.

Cooling-off (14-day right)

For qualifying distance contracts purchased online, you have a 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. If digital content has been downloaded or consumed with your express consent and acknowledgement of loss of cancellation rights, the right may be lost. Before you cancel: negotiate

Microsoft sometimes issues refunds automatically during the cancellation flow and may assess eligibility for a refund of the most recent recurring charge if canceled within 30 days after payment. There are no widely reported standard retention discounts published for consumers; to request a retention offer, contact Microsoft support through your account and ask for account options or a discount. If your subscription was purchased via Apple or Google, request retention or refund from that store.

Calculate annual costs by multiplying monthly price by 12 and compare to published annual price. Examples using Microsoft published prices:

• Microsoft 365 Personal: £8.49 x 12 = £101.88 versus annual £84.99 - saving by choosing annual: £101.88 - £84.99 = £16.89 per year.
• Microsoft 365 Family: £10.49 x 12 = £125.88 versus annual £104.99 - saving: £20.89 per year.
• Microsoft 365 Premium: £18.99 x 12 = £227.88 versus annual £189.99 - saving: £37.89 per year.

Refund timings and rights

For subscriptions bought directly from Microsoft, a refund may be available if canceled at or before the first renewal or if canceled within 30 days after a recurring charge. Eligibility is determined automatically during cancellation. Prorated refunds are generally not available in the UK for Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, OneDrive, and ClipChamp subscriptions except within a 14-day initial purchase window. How to escalate

First complain to Microsoft support and keep records. If unresolved, seek help from Citizens Advice, the Competition and Markets Authority if you suspect unfair auto-renewal practices, or use payment protections such as Section 75 or chargeback via your card issuer for qualifying card payments. Check final billing and refunds

After cancellation, review your bank or card statements for any refund. Microsoft states refunds for subscriptions purchased directly are assessed automatically during cancellation and a refund of the most recent recurring charge may be possible if canceled within 30 days of payment. Preserve your files and account data

Before cancellation completes, download copies of important files stored in OneDrive and export email or contact lists. Microsoft notes access often continues until the end of the current billing period; ensure you save essential data prior to that deadline.

Re-activation and repeat subscriptions

You can re-subscribe at any time using the same Microsoft account. If you had purchased through Apple or Google, re-subscription is managed in the respective store.
