If you bought Sage 50 online or off-premises you have a 14 day cancellation right under The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. If you cancel within 14 days and have not started downloading or used the service that removes the cooling-off right, you are entitled to a refund. Required proof: order number and date of purchase. Applicable law: The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
If Sage raises the price and your contract allows cancellation for that reason, contact support and request termination citing the price increase. Required proof: notification of price increase from Sage and your current invoice. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015 can be used if the change is an unfair contract term; escalate to Citizens Advice or CMA if necessary.
If the account holder dies, a representative should contact Sage support and provide a copy of the death certificate and proof of authority to act for the estate. Sage's standard approach is to close or transfer accounts after verification. Required proof: death certificate and evidence of estate administration. Applicable law: not a specific statute listed in the research; escalate to Sage support.
If Sage fails to provide services with reasonable care and skill you may terminate under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Required proof: evidence of the breach, communications with support and timeline of failed fixes. Applicable law: Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Sage Cover contracts are 12 months. Cancellations in the first year are only considered if Sage receives notice within 30 days of the invoice date, no aspect of the service has been used (including technical support or HR helpline), no product upgrade has been provided and no discounts applied. Required proof: invoice and evidence that support services were not used. Applicable law: contract terms in Sage Terms and Conditions of Supply.
Software can be returned and downloads reimbursed within 30 days of purchase if in original unopened condition and not installed. If installed, a refund may be considered after submission of a certificate confirming un-installation and internal review by Sage Customer Relations Team. Required proof: proof of purchase and evidence of un-installation if applicable. Applicable law: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 for distance sales and Sage returns policy.
Sage does not publish standard public retention discounts for Sage 50. Ask support for the following when you call 0191 479 5955 or raise a support ticket: (1) a retention discount on your current monthly fee, (2) downgrade from Professional to Standard, (3) move from monthly to annual billing to benefit from any 1 month free annual offer, (4) pause Sage Cover or reduce user count. When you contact support, provide your account number, current price and a clear alternative price you have found.
Example calculations using Sage published prices for 2025/26.
- Sage 50 Accounts Standard (New Customer): £92 x 12 = £1,104 per year. Sage lists an annual price of £1,104 + VAT (1 month free).
- Sage 50 Accounts Professional (New Customer): £186 x 12 = £2,232 per year. Sage lists an annual price of £2,232 + VAT (1 month free).
Alternatives and savings:
- Moneypex Accounting: £4.99 x 12 = £59.88 per year. Saving vs Sage 50 Standard: £1,104 - £59.88 = £1,044.12 per year.
- Finovo: £15 x 12 = £180 per year. Saving vs Sage 50 Standard: £1,104 - £180 = £924 per year.
- Sage Accounting Entry Level: £14 x 12 = £168 per year. Saving vs Sage 50 Standard: £1,104 - £168 = £936 per year.
United Kingdom consumer protections include The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 which gives a 14 day right to cancel distance and off-premises contracts, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) monitors unfair auto-renewal and hard-to-cancel subscriptions.
The 14 day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 applies to online purchases. The right is lost if digital content is supplied during the cancellation period and you gave express consent for immediate supply. Required proof for a claim: order confirmation and evidence of timing for any download or activation.
First complain to Sage via support and keep written records. If unresolved, seek help from Citizens Advice and consider raising a complaint with the CMA about unfair contract terms or hard-to-cancel subscriptions. For qualifying card payments you may use Section 75 or request a chargeback through your card issuer.
Before cancellation, export your accounts ledger, customer and supplier lists, invoices and VAT reports. Use Sage 50 export tools or CSV exports and store copies off-site. Confirm export success before finalising cancellation.
If you cancel at least 5 working days before your next billing date your subscription will remain active until that date with no further payments. Refunds for unopened software are possible within 30 days of purchase as per Sage returns rules. If you require a refund after installation you must submit evidence of un-installation for Sage Customer Relations Team review. See Sage returns policy for details.
To re-activate buy a new subscription or request re-activation via Sage support. If you kept a backup or Sage Drive copy you can restore company data after re-activation according to Sage instructions.
