How billing works

Cooling-off period (consumer right to withdraw)

Consumers have a statutory right to withdraw from the subscription agreement within fourteen (14) days from the day of conclusion of the Agreement without giving any reason. To exercise this right, notify HP with a clear statement by email to [email protected] or by post to the address in the introduction of the Instant Ink Terms of Service. If you submit withdrawal online you will receive an acknowledgement of receipt without delay.

Moving address

If you need to cancel because you are moving, supply proof such as a signed new tenancy agreement or utility bill showing the new address and your name. Instant Ink does not publish a dedicated relocation form; use the email [email protected] or a signed postal letter.

Price increase

If Instant Ink increases the price and you do not accept the change, you may cancel. Keep the communication from Instant Ink that notified you of the increase as proof. Under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 the trader must provide an end of contract notice when a subscription ends or is cancelled.

Death of subscriber

To cancel for the death of the account holder, send a copy of the death certificate and proof of authority for the account (executor or family member details) by email or post. Instant Ink does not publish a publicised template for this request.

Legitimate grounds accepted by Instant Ink

Research shows Instant Ink recognises the 14-day consumer withdrawal right and provides online cancellation pages including a business-specific cancellation link. For other legitimate grounds (for example, printer fault or mis-selling) provide supporting documents such as purchase receipts or correspondence with HP support. Instant Ink has not published an exhaustive list of accepted legitimate grounds.

End of commitment

Instant Ink plans can be cancelled at any time and cancellation takes effect at the end of your current monthly billing period. There is no minimum contractual commitment period published by Instant Ink.

Before you cancel: how to negotiate

Research did not identify public retention offers from Instant Ink. To request a retention offer, contact HP Customer Support or email [email protected], state the plan name and request a discount, higher page allowance or a temporary pause. Save any written offer or chat transcript as proof.

Use the monthly prices to check annual cost before cancelling. Examples from Instant Ink pricing:

• Light printing plan: £1.79 x 12 = £21.48 per year
• Frequent printing plan: £13.49 x 12 = £161.88 per year
• Business printing plan: £28.99 x 12 = £347.88 per year
• Small Business Light Ink Plan: £0.99 x 12 = £11.88 per year

Cheapest competitor found in research: Epson ReadyPrint Flex at £1.99 per month. Annual cost: £1.99 x 12 = £23.88 per year. Compare to an Instant Ink plan to measure savings. Example: switching from Instant Ink Frequent (£13.49 x 12 = £161.88) to Epson ReadyPrint Flex (£23.88) saves £138.00 per year (calculation: £161.88 - £23.88 = £138.00).

Key UK consumer law

The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 provide a 14-day cooling-off period for most distance contracts. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and prohibits unfair contract terms.

New digital subscription rules

Escalation path

If HP does not resolve your issue, first complain to HP Customer Support in writing. If still unresolved, contact Citizens Advice for guidance, then consider a chargeback through your card issuer or complaint to the relevant ombudsman. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) monitors unclear auto-renewal and difficult-to-cancel subscriptions.

Cartridge and printing access

After cancellation HP will remotely disable Instant Ink cartridges rendering them unusable. To continue printing you must purchase standard HP original cartridges.

Final billing and refunds

Your payment method will be charged in full for your last monthly period. Research shows Instant Ink states no refunds for unused ink or unused monthly pages, except where you exercise the statutory 14-day withdrawal right as a consumer. If you believe an overpayment occurred, request a refund from HP and reference the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024.

Re-activation

You can re-subscribe at any time through the Instant Ink sign-up path. Re-subscription requires a new plan selection and activation through your HP account.
