Cooling-off period (14 days)
Rule - You have a 14-day cooling-off period under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 starting from the date the contract begins or the date you receive policy documents, whichever is later. If you cancel within 14 days and no claim has been paid you get a full refund. If a claim has been paid during the cooling-off period, no refund is due.
Required proof - Policy number and date of purchase.
Applicable law - Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
Death of the pet or pet stolen/missing
Rule - If your pet died, was stolen or went missing and you have made a relevant claim, Tesco will stop taking further monthly payments for the current insurance period. For annual payments, a proportionate refund may be issued if the only claims were for death or theft/loss. If any other claim was paid during the policy year no refund will be given for annual payments.
Required proof - Veterinary death certificate or report, or police report for theft, and your claim reference.
Price increase or change in contract terms
Rule - If Tesco changes the terms or increases premiums materially you can cancel. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 protects against unfair contract terms and the CMA flags unclear auto-renewal or unfair cancellation barriers. Where a material change is applied you may cancel without penalty and request a refund consistent with Tesco's refund terms.
Required proof - Written notice from Tesco showing the change and the change effective date; your policy number.
Applicable law - Consumer Rights Act 2015; CMA guidance on auto-renewal and cancellation transparency.
Moving / relocation
Rule - Moving address alone is not an automatic right to refund unless cover cannot continue (for example moving outside the United Kingdom or to a jurisdiction where insurance cannot be provided). If cover cannot be maintained because you permanently move outside the UK, cancel and request a proportionate refund if eligible and no disqualifying claims have been paid.
Required proof - New address details and supporting documents such as utility bill or immigration paperwork showing relocation outside the United Kingdom.
Legitimate grounds accepted by Tesco Pet Insurance (from research)
Rule - Tesco explicitly recognises pet death and pet theft/loss as grounds that affect remaining payments and refunds. Other legitimate grounds such as a material contractual change or inability to provide cover due to a move outside the UK are actionable under consumer law.
Required proof - Documents relevant to the ground: vet or police reports for pet death/theft; written notice of contractual change from Tesco; proof of relocation abroad.
