Cancel BBC the easy way

Overview

The BBC is the public service broadcaster of the United Kingdom, producing TV, radio, online news, documentaries and magazine-style digital subscriptions. It operates under a public remit to inform, educate and entertain audiences worldwide.

Services and subscriptions

The BBC offers services funded by the TV Licence and commercial subscriptions for specific products such as the BBC: World News & Stories app. The UK TV Licence remains required for watching or recording live TV and for use of BBC iPlayer.

Company facts

Web (BBC.com or BBC app)

1. Sign in to the BBC account you used to subscribe.
2. Go to Account settings or Manage subscriptions.
3. Find the subscription you want to cancel and select Cancel.
4. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm cancellation.
5. Save or screenshot the confirmation message and keep the confirmation email.

iOS - Apple App Store

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap your name.
2. Tap Subscriptions, find the BBC subscription and tap Cancel.
3. Follow Apple prompts; BBC cannot cancel App Store subscriptions on your behalf.
4. Keep the Apple cancellation confirmation email or screenshot.

Android - Google Play

1. Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon.
2. Tap Payments & subscriptions then Subscriptions.
3. Select the BBC subscription and tap Cancel subscription.
4. Save the Google Play confirmation for your records.

Post (registered letter)

1. Write a signed letter including your full name, billing address, email address associated with the account and subscription details.
2. Address it to: BBC, Portland Pl, W1A 1AA London, United Kingdom.
3. Send by signed-for or registered post and keep the proof of posting.
4. Expect a reply by post or email within several working days.

Email

1. Send an email with your account details and clear statement "I wish to cancel my subscription" to [email protected] or use the BBC Help Centre contact form.
2. Keep the reply email or any automated confirmation as proof.
3. If no reply within 14 days, send a registered letter or escalate (see legal protections).

Moving abroad

If you permanently move outside the UK and that affects your right to use a service requiring a UK TV Licence or changes your subscription eligibility, provide proof such as a new foreign address or utility bill and a copy of your travel documents. The BBC will assess eligibility changes on receipt of documentation.

Price increase

If BBC raises the price of a paid subscription at renewal, you may cancel before the renewal takes effect by notifying BBC with a clear statement. Retain the price change notice and your cancellation confirmation. Death of subscriber

Provide a copy of the death certificate and the subscriber account details. The BBC will close accounts on receipt of appropriate documentation and refund any overpayment if applicable under the refund rules.

Legitimate ground accepted by BBC

BBC accepts contractual termination where legal rights apply such as cooling-off periods under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 and refund obligations set out in its policy. Provide documents required by the circumstance, such as proof of eligibility for concessionary TV Licence schemes or a statutory right to cancel.

End of commitment

If your subscription was on an annual plan, cancellation can be made but you will usually retain access until the paid annual period ends. Check whether your plan is monthly or annual in your account settings. For switching from annual to monthly or vice versa, follow the process in the BBC Help Centre at change subscription.

Cooling-off rights

Under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 and the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have a right to cancel during initial and renewal cooling-off periods where those rules apply. If you cancel during a statutory cooling-off period you may be entitled to a refund and no cancellation penalty can be imposed. Before you cancel: try to negotiate

BBC does not publish a standard retention offer list. If you want to keep access, contact support through your account or write to [email protected] asking if any offers or alternative plans apply to your account. Keep the reply in writing. If your subscription was purchased via Apple or Google Play, request retention offers through the in-app support channels because BBC cannot change App Store or Google billing on your behalf.

How much you save by cancelling

Calculate yearly savings using the BBC plan prices.

Example 1 - BBC: World News monthly: 12 x £8.99 = £107.88 per year.

Example 2 - BBC: World News annual: £89.99 per year (annual option saves £17.89 vs monthly x12).

TV Licence cost: £15.00 per month x 12 = £180.00 per year (current UK rate; increases effective 1 April 2026 to £180.00 annual total).

Key UK consumer law

Your cancellation and refund rights flow from the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (services must be performed with reasonable care and skill) and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (14-day cooling-off period for most contracts concluded online or off-premises). The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 adds specific cooling-off protections for subscription renewals. The regulator to consult for unfair practices is the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

Cooling-off and refunds

The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 provide a 14-day cancellation right for most online purchases with a refund, except where the consumer has expressly consented to immediate download/streaming of digital content and acknowledged loss of the right to cancel. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 sets obligations for cooling-off notices on renewals; see section 261 and Part 4 of the Act at Part 4.

How to escalate

1. Complain to BBC support first and keep written records. 2. If unresolved, contact Citizens Advice for guidance: Citizens Advice cancelling a service. 3. If a payment qualifies under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act or via chargeback, contact your card issuer. 4. Report unfair auto-renewal or hard-to-cancel practices to the CMA.

Access and final billing

After cancellation you will retain access until the end of the paid billing period. You will not be charged further unless a renewal occurs after you cancel. Check your final billing date in account settings or in the confirmation email. See BBC billing timing at When will I be charged.

Data and re-activation

If you want to keep your account for BBC services but not a paid subscription, leave account details in place. To re-subscribe, sign in and choose a plan. For questions about what data BBC retains, contact BBC support using the Help Centre contact options.

Proof to keep

Keep the cancellation confirmation email, any third-party receipts (Apple/Google), and proof of postage if you sent a registered letter. These items are required if you escalate or request a statutory refund.

Use this checklist immediately when you decide to cancel so you have evidence and minimise future charges.

• Sign in to your BBC account and cancel via Manage subscriptions; save the confirmation email.
• If you subscribed via Apple or Google, cancel through your Apple ID or Google Play and save the store confirmation.
• If you send a letter, use signed-for post and keep proof of posting.
• Record the date you will lose access (end of billing period).
• Check bank or card statements for final payment and request chargeback or Section 75 only if appropriate.
• If you believe you have a statutory refund right (cooling-off), include the cooling-off notice in your complaint and request a refund in writing.
