If you move home and Sky Q cannot be supplied at your new address, you may be able to end the contract early. You must provide proof such as a signed tenancy agreement, mortgage completion statement or new address confirmation. Sky will assess whether the service can be moved; if Sky cannot move the service and there is no supply at new address, you may end the contract without early termination charges where Sky cannot provide the service.
If Sky increases the price of your package during an active contract and you do not accept the increase, you have a contractual right to end the contract. Provide the notification from Sky as proof and a written notice of your decision to end the contract. This right is based on the terms of your contract and consumer rights regarding variation of contract price.
If the account holder dies, next of kin or estate executors can close the account. Provide a death certificate and proof of identity of the person acting for the estate. Sky will close the account and finalise billing once documentation is verified.
Sky accepts legitimate grounds to end a contract early if Sky breaches a contractual term, if the service cannot be supplied at a new address, or if there is an accepted price variation dispute. Required proof depends on the ground: for breach provide written evidence of the breach and correspondence with Sky; for supply failure provide address evidence; for price disputes provide Sky's price increase notice.
When your minimum term ends (12, 18 or 24 months as per your contract), you may give 31 days notice to end the contract without early termination charges. Provide a written or phone notice; Sky processes phone or online notices immediately and final billing follows the 31 day notice period.
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have a 14 day cooling-off period for distance contracts. For services, the 14 day period begins when you enter the contract. If you asked Sky to start the service during the 14 day period and then cancel, Sky can charge for the service provided up to the cancellation date. Refunds due after a cooling-off cancellation must be issued within 14 days of the trader receiving the goods back or of proof of return, or of the cancellation for services.
Applicable law where stated: Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013; Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Sky is known to offer retention deals at the point of cancellation or when you call to discuss moving or upgrading. Typical retention tactics include temporary price reductions, free Sky Q Multiscreen months or discounted upgrades. To ask for these offers call 03442 41 44 14, state that you are considering cancelling and request current retention offers. If you receive an offer ask for its exact price and contract length and request a confirmation email.
Example: a Sky Q package 'from £31 per month' equals 31 x 12 = £372 per year. A contract-free alternative NOW at £9.99 per month equals 9.99 x 12 = £119.88 per year. Yearly saving by switching from Sky Q at £31 to NOW at £9.99 is 372.00 - 119.88 = £252.12 per year.
Other concrete prices you may save on or change: Sky Q Multiscreen £14.83 per month, Sky Q Bundle £37.39 per month, Sky Q Silver Bundle £50.45 per month, Sky Q HD/Ultra HD add-on £12 per month. Choose the cheapest real alternative NOW at £9.99 per month if you only need contract-free access to Sky content.
Your cancellation and refund rights are governed by the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Consumer Contracts Regulations give a 14 day cooling-off period for distance contracts; for services the 14 day period starts when you enter into the contract. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires services to be performed with reasonable care and skill and prevents unfair contract terms such as disproportionate cancellation penalties.
First complain to Sky via phone, online messaging, email ([email protected]) or by post. If you cannot resolve the dispute, escalate to an alternative dispute resolution body used by the communications sector. For Sky customers the Communications & Internet Services Adjudication Scheme (CISAS) is available. You can also seek guidance from Citizens Advice or use card chargeback/Section 75 where applicable for qualifying card payments. For cooling-off and refund detail see Which - Consumer Contracts Regulations.
Keep any confirmation of the cancellation showing the end date and final billing. Sky Q boxes and Sky Q Mini boxes are often supplied on loan. If Sky requires return of equipment, they will notify you with return instructions and address. Keep proof of return or collection to avoid disputed charges.
Expect a final bill covering the notice period, any accepted early termination charges and outstanding fees. Refunds due under the Consumer Contracts Regulations must be issued within 14 days of cancellation or of Sky receiving returned goods. If you cancelled within the 14 day cooling-off period and the service started earlier, Sky can charge for the service used up to cancellation.
If you decide to rejoin Sky in the future you may face new contract terms and new minimum commitments. Keep a copy of your old contract and any exit negotiations as reference when discussing a new subscription with Sky.
